A VPN is useful for a number of things: it may improve privacy and security, or provide access to regionally locked services and apps. Privacy is improved because the VPN's IP address is revealed to sites and services instead of your own, and if the VPN does not keep logs, it is impossible to track down the "real" IP address.

A lot of consideration needs to go into selecting the right VPN service as many make promises that they cannot keep.

NordVPN

NordVPN is a long-standing premium VPN service that ticks all the right boxes. The service has a strict no-logs policy (verified by independent audits twice), offers more than 5500 VPN servers in 59 different countries, has no speed or bandwidth limits, supports P2P, includes kill switch, DNS leak and protection against malicious sites, allows you to run on multiple devices, and advanced features such as double-protection and Onion over VPN support.

NordVPN support all major operating systems and many web browsers. You can install the software on Windows, Mac OS and Linux, and on devices running the mobile operating systems Android and iOS.

Windows setup is straightforward and all that is left to do to get started is to sign in with your account.

It is a good idea to open the Settings first to make sure that everything is set up according to your requirements.

Some features are not turned on by default. You may want to consider enabling the Internet Kill Switch, which terminates Internet access if the VPN connection drops, enable custom DNS support, and disable the "help us improve" sending of anonymous aggregated data.

Connecting to one of the servers is ultra-fast, it is near instant thanks to support for WireGuard. You can pick a server in a country that is supported, or use a specialty server instead, e.g. for P2P or extra protection.

The test 50/10 Mbit line and another 100/10 Mbit line were both maxed out when downloading from servers capable of the download speed.

NordPass

NordPass is a relatively new service by the same company that provides password management capabilities. The software is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android, and also as browser extensions for various web browsers.

The account can be protected with two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security. Passwords do get encrypted locally and are stored encrypted in the cloud ensuring that no one, not even NordPass employees may access the saved passwords.

The password manager includes a tool to create secure complex passwords, syncs data across all devices it is installed on, supports imports to migrate from another password manager, and supports auto-logins and saving of passwords with a single-click.

NordPass users may also access passwords in the browser, and store other data including notes, personal information and credit card details as well using the same level of security.
